    Merry Christmas!

With the year almost behind us, it provides an opportunity to look back; however, it is also a time to look forward and plan for our future. I enjoy this time of year to be with family and friends.

As a family we also like to give back to our community, we donate money and time to local charities. Not only does this remind us about what this time of year is all about, it is a wonderful time to reflect on how fortunate we are.

I am looking forward to 2010; there are many exciting opportunities ahead!

From my family to yours, Merry Christmas.

    Holiday Waste

Christmas is a time for joyful celebrations with family – but it’s also a time for excess and waste. Think of how many gifts end up getting tossed into the garbage, along with uneaten leftovers, wrapping paper and ribbons, broken ornaments and more. That’s a lot of extra material going to our landfills.

There are lots of ways your family can make this Christmas a green one – even if we do happen to get snow this year! Here are a few of the things my family will be doing in our home this holiday season:

    • Giving thoughtful gifts that don’t end up in the garbage.
    • Selecting gifts with less packaging.
    • Using less gift wrap and more reusable gift bags.
    • Saving as much gift wrap, bows and ribbons as possible for future re-use.
    • Putting all of our food scraps and food-soiled papers into our green waste cart.

You might have seen Metro Vancouver’s great holiday campaign this year with the message: “The best way to reduce waste is not to create it in the first place.”

Check out the Zero Waste Challenge section at www.metrovancouver.org for more ideas about producing less waste this holiday season, including an online forum where you can share your waste-reducing tips with others.

Have a merry and “green” Christmas!

    Community Safety

This past week I had the honour of meeting some very special volunteers in our community through their annual Christmas parties. These are the people who are helping to make our community a safer place to live; they consist of Crime Watch; Community Police Station; Auxiliary Police; and Emergency Preparedness members. In total, there are over 300 individuals volunteering well over 10,000 hours a year. In fact, there was one gentleman who retired this year after volunteering as an Auxiliary Police Officer for 40 years!

Many times we don’t see them, as they are working behind the scenes, preparing for events or monitoring situations; they are the extra eyes and ears on the streets or they are helping other local groups host successful events. For example, the Emergency Preparedness volunteers help PoCo Minor Soccer with their annual Thanksgiving Tournament, where over 2000 players come to PoCo.

Thank you to all our community safety volunteers for making our Community a safer community to live, work and play.
