Water Conservation

With so much rain in the Lower Mainland, you may wonder: why do I have to conserve water?

The reason we need to conserve water is because of our limited capacity to store water. The reservoirs in the three Greater Vancouver watersheds - Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam - all have limited storage capacity, so not all the rainfall and snowmelt can be captured.

This presents a challenge, since 70 per cent of our rain falls in autumn and winter, yet our peak water consumption is during the summer.

Water consumption in July is usually 35 per cent higher that water consumption in December.  The combination of the increased demand during the summer months and our limited storage capacity is why we have to conserve water.
