Anniversary Rick Hansen Relay with a community celebration, inspiring art and stories, and more.Port Coquitlam is one of more than 600 communities being visited by the 12,000-km relay, which began Aug. 24 in Newfoundland and ends May 22 in Vancouver. The relay is scheduled to stop at Terry Fox Secondary School’s Access For All event (about 1:30-1:45 p.m.), a bicycle escort over the Coast Meridian Overpass (about 2:40-3 p.m.), a stop at Leigh Square (about 3:30 p.m.) and a stop at Scotiabank (about 4 p.m.)
One of the 34 medal-bearers completing our local segment is Bob Whyte, who raised $1,700 in a swim-a-thon to support the Rick Hansen Foundation after injuring his spinal cord in a 1985 ski
accident.
Free Community Events
Whyte will carry the medal into Leigh Square, where an event emceed by Global TV’s Kaitlyn Herbst
will feature:
- Entertainment by Riverside Secondary School’s Korean drumming group and Music Council, the Wheeling 8’s square dance group, musicians Bill Marshall & Brothers, the award-winning, Archbishop Carney Senior Vocal Jazz Ensemble and vocalists Teaghan Iverson, Emily Amaral and Marquis Byrd.
- A special Farmer’s Market from 3 to 6 p.m. featuring food vendors and artists.
- An injury-prevention display from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Outlet, including a showing of the CBC biography Never Give Up on Your Dreams – The Life and Times of Rick Hansen.
- The opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. of the art exhibit Challenging the Myths – Arts & Disability at the Gathering Place (exhibit continues to June 11).
- A Rising Stars event in the bandshell at 6 p.m. recognizing local athletic stars.
Relay Fast Facts - Begins on August 24, 2011 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador and concludes in Vancouver, British Columbia on May 22, 2012.
- Fully recreates the original Man In Motion cross-Canada tour, spanning 12,000km from coast-to-coast
- Will travel through over 600 communities, visit every capital city and all provinces and territories and reach more than 70% of the Canadian population
