Who is the Port Coquitlam Spirit of BC Community Committee? What do we do?
The PoC Spirit Committee was established by City Council in 2004 to identify 2010 Olympic and Paralympic community spirit and legacy building opportunities for the City of Port Coquitlam. As the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games approach, we are excited about ideas that will generate community pride. The Poco Spirit Committee is associated with the Spirit of BC Community Committee program established and run by 2010 Legacies Now, a provincially recognized organization.
The Committee is a group of eleven citizens, representing a cross-section of the community including sports and disabled sports, arts, heritage and culture, social interests, the business community and the community at large. After an extensive public consultation process, the Committee recently made recommendations to Council on potential projects and activities that will tap into the Olympic spirit, promote community spirit, sports and arts & culture and cultivate long-term legacies for future generations.
Some of the ideas we are hoping to pursue over the next three years include: setting up a Legacy Walk of Fame, creating a Legacy Foundation, establishing an annual Music Festival, supporting a Literacy program, enhancing the delivery and organizational capabilities of the community sports and volunteer systems , creating Olympic themed banners, and exploring opportunities for complimentary opening/closing ceremonies. The Task Force is charged with making these great ideas happen.
Come volunteer with us!
