2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Spirit Week 2010 imagesThe 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games were an exciting event for the Vancouver and Whistler area. The City of Port Coquitlam offered the community a variety of opportunities to be involved, and the community responded was an outpouring of spirit and pride.

Some of the highlights included:

  • Thousands of people wearing red and lining the streets to watch the Olympic Torch Relay come through Port Coquitlam.
  • High attendance at a wide variety of events and activities including sports, arts and cultural events, nightly Games screenings at the PoCo Zone, community dinners, family skates and other special programming.
  • Hosting First Nations youth from Prince George and a seniors' curling team from Salmon Arm.
  • Sharing hundreds of events tickets with youngsters who would otherwise not have had a chance to see the Games.
  • Lasting partnerships between different interest groups who came together for a common purpose.
  • Legacy projects that will benefit the community for years to come.

Port Coquitlam Spirit Committee (formerly the Port Coquitlam Spirit of BC Community Committee and the Port Coquitlam Legacy Task Force)

In 2005, the City formed the Port Coquitlam Legacy Task Force, comprised of dedicated members of the community who represent diverse interests, including sports and disabled sports, arts, culture and heritage, youth, businesses, social development and the community at large. The Task Force's mandate was to explore opportunities for the community to be involved in, contribute to, and benefit from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to achieve long-lasting legacies for our community.

The Task Force worked diligently to develop concepts and ideas that have historic emphasis in community spirit, sports and arts & culture to cultivate long-term legacies for future generations. A series of open houses in December 2005 were held to collect community feedback on potential projects, legacies and opportunities associated with the 2010 Games. Based on the  feedback, the Task Force refined these ideas and presented a final report and recommendations to Council in July 2006.

In late 2006, the Legacy Task Force was invited to become an official provincially recognized Spirit of BC Community Committee under the umbrella of the 2010 Legacies Now organization. Council supported a request to change the name of the Legacy Task Force to the Port Coquitlam Spirit of BC Community Committee ("Spirit Committee") so they could be part of this exciting program.

The Spirit Committee worked with a number of community partners (such as Terry Fox Library, the Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society, and the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce) to set the foundations for going forward with the 2010 legacy ideas that were presented to Council.

Thanks to these efforts, a long and varied list of legacies has been achieved to benefit the community.

The committee also explored opportunities such as organizing a Spirit of Port Coquitlam Celebration as part of the provincial Spirit Week celebrations.

The first Spirit of Port Coquitlam Celebration was held in 2007, and over the years the event grew into Spirit Week, a week-long celebration of the community, people and spirit of Port Coquitlam. This annual tradition has continued.
