Join in the fun this May Day – and feel the pride!
Our May Day Festival is one of the few civic events in the Lower Mainland that date back 87 years – and that's just one of the reasons it's distinctive and special.
May Day is symbolic of the small-town charm and spirit that Port Coquitlam has worked hard to retain throughout the years. It’s truly a made-in-PoCo event – each year, local children and adults contribute thousands of volunteer hours to help preserve and celebrate this wonderful community tradition.
Every aspect of May Day is touched by volunteers, from the hard-working May Day Task Force led by Bev Moulds to the many, many individuals who donate time and talents to make this event such a success.
We see groups with different interests – the arts, culture, sports, the environment, community service – come together for a common goal. And we also see the younger generation taking part in many ways, such as the May Day Royal Party, led this year by May Queen Yas Vilkiji from Minnekhada Middle School and Ambassador Zachary Sclater from Hope Lutheran School.
It’s the participation from all ages and interests that brings the family atmosphere to our May Day Festival – in much the same way that our community’s wide spectrum of volunteers bring a special quality to Port Coquitlam throughout the year.
It’s been wonderful to see the recent resurgence of PoCo Pride and volunteerism in our community – it’s making Port Coquitlam a better place, and it’s also making for more exciting community events! Building on last year’s spectacular May Day Festival, this year’s celebration will be better than ever. Get all the details in the local newspapers, along with the City’s website and Facebook page.
Tradition is important. The Grande Parade, May pole dancing, the Royal Party – these are part of the foundation of our May Day festival. But even more important are the traditions of community spirit and volunteerism that we experience not only at May Day, but all year long in Port Coquitlam.
On behalf of Port Coquitlam City Council, we invite you to join in the fun this May Day – and feel the pride!
