In December of 2001 the Port Coquitlam City Council adopted the municipality’s first Cultural Policy and Plan. Through a community consultation process a clear vision for cultural activity was developed which informed the directions articulated in both the Policy and the Strategic Plan. The Cultural Policy and Plan provides a reference point for future decision-making and is intended to guide cultural development in Port Coquitlam in the years 2002 to 2012.
The Cultural Policy and Plan Report outlines a series of strategies and associated goals designed to bring the Vision to life. The Report indicates that building cultural leadership is a primary strategic direction. The goal is to increase community input and participation and as a result build a stronger, more empowered community. To this end the Plan recommends that the City of Port Coquitlam create a Community Cultural Development Advisory Committee to assist the City in the implementation of its Policy and Plan.
