Child Fitness Tax Credit
The Federal Government approved a Children's Fitness Tax Credit, which allows parents to claim a non-refundable tax credit on amounts up to $500, paid in 2007 to register a child (under 16) in an "eligible program" of physical activity. Use your registration receipt(s) when submitting your tax return to Revenue Canada.
Effective January 01, 2007, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit allows a non-refundable tax credit on eligible amounts up to $500 paid by parents to register a child under 16 years in an eligible program of physical activity.
Definition:
An ongoing program, suitable for children, who are less than 16 years of age, in which substantially all of the activities undertaken include a significant amount of physical activity that contributes to cardio-respiratory endurance, plus one or more of:
Muscular strength, Muscular endurance, Flexibility, and Balance.
Qualifying Programs:
Qualifying programs must be supervised programs of a minimum of 8 weeks or, for children’s camps, 5
consecutive days, and include a significant amount of physical activity contributing to cardio-respiratory
endurance, plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility or balance.
Qualifying programs must have 90% or more of the activities include a significant amount of physical activity. Not all of our programs qualify for the tax benefit.

- Only those programs paid for in 2007 and taken in 2007 qualify for the tax benefit. Programs paid for in 2006 do not qualify.
- Activities where riding in or on a motorized vehicle is an essential part of the activity do not qualify
- Activities occurring as part of regular school physical education programming do not qualify
- Self directed (drop in) activities do not qualify.
Children with Disabilities:
Specific costs related to children with disabilities’ ability to participate in the activity would be covered.
These would include:
- Equipment and assistive devices
- The cost of transportation to and from the activity; and
- The cost of attendant care while participating in the activity.
