Swim The Pacific Ocean
swimpacificmap

swimpacificdistances A new Swim the Pacific lengths challenge at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre will have swimmers dropping by Hawaii, Samoa and Fiji as they clock up the kilometres en route to Queenstown, New Zealand.

Starting Sunday Sept. 26, swimmers who register for the challenge will track the lengths they swim towards Queenstown over the next year, and receive incentive prizes along the way.

This swim challenge works out to a total of 365 km of swimming and a kilometer can be equated to 40 lengths in the pool. The average swimmer can complete 40 lengths in around 45 minutes, making this challenge a great way for people to come in and get a little more than the recommended 30 minutes of activity a day.

Sign Up:
Participants can sign up for Swim the Pacific in the Hyde Creek pool area at any time during the challenge, which runs to August 2011.

How it Works:
Queenstown is 14,600 km away from Port Coquitlam. Every pool length equals one ocean km, for a total of 14,600 lengths and a swim distance of 365 kilometres. Port Coquitlam Parks and Recreation is partnering with a Lake Leisure facility in Queenstown that is holding the same challenge, in reverse.

The entire challenge should take most swimmers about 274 hours to complete. The average swimmer can complete 40 lengths (1 km) in about 45 minutes, so participants will be on track to achieve Health Canada’s recommended 30-60 minutes of activity a day.

Encouraged Participation Times:

  • 6 am - 8:30am Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • 7 am  8:30 am Tuesday and Thursday
  • Noon - 1 pm Monday - Friday
  • 6 pm - 7 pm Monday - Thursday
  • 5 pm - 6 pm on Fridays
Phase 1 - 2450km
