It's Easy Being Green

Make it a green Christmas!

The City of Port Coquitlam makes it easy for local residents to “be green” by providing a number of programs aimed to save energy, conserve resources and protect the environment.

Please see the information below and links to the left.

  •  The Green Cart Program provides year-round curbside pickup of food scraps, food-soiled papers and garden/yard trimmings to both single-family homes. Multi-family complexes may also sign up for the program.
  • Blue cart recycling collection is provided year-round to single-family homes. Multi-family complexes may also sign up for collection.
  • Recycle Your Christmas Tree! The City of Port Coquitlam does not provide curbside Christmas tree collection. Click here for information on properly disposing of your tree, including a "How To" video. More green holiday tips.

  • Backyard Composting addresses food and yard waste at the source, therefore using less energy and resources. Composters are available at a subsidized rate of $25 at the Operations Centre, 1737 Broadway Street (cash or cheque only please). For information call 604.927.5496.
  • Check out the Recycling Directory for a searchable database of locations for re-use, donation, recycling, and safe disposal of unwanted items.
  • Zero Waste ChallengePort Coquitlam supports partner initiatives such as Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Challenge, which includes a ban on throwing recyclable or returnable items into the garbage, and the Recycling Council of BC’s recycling hotline (604-RECYCLE) and website.

Protecting the Environment

Green Yard Care is a good way to create an attractive, healthy and easy-to-maintain lawn without chemicals and using fewer resources. Tactics include grasscycling (leaving clippings on your lawn after mowing), fertilizing moderately in early September or mid-late May with organic or slow-release fertilizers, watering thoroughly but infrequently, and avoiding pesticides.

Conserving Energy and Resources
  • The City’s Online Services save paper and energy. Residents can renew dog or business licences, claim homeowner grants, visit PoCoMAP and access a variety of information, as well as sign up for recreation programs at www.experienceit.ca.
